The 140 C 38 is part of the batch of 70 machines ordered by the Ministry of the Armed Forces. The 140 C 38 is the result of a series of 340 locomotives built between 1913 and 1920. These locomotives originated from the state railway network where the first 70 locomotives built in France were put into service in 1913. On the other hand, the French army, having retained this type of locomotive for the traction of heavy artillery pieces on railways (ALVF) ordered 70 copies, which were built in Great Britain and delivered in 1916 and 1919.
