"Northern Chief." It was ordered by Count Louis Zborowski at the same time as the locomotive "Green Goddess" and was stored with her at New Romney until the construction of the line began.

Northern Chief was used during the construction of the line and had the honor of hauling the first official train during the visit of the Duke of York on August 5, 1926. Initially, her history closely resembled that of No. 1 locomotive.

However, in 1936, Northern Chief appeared with a tapered boiler lagging that was more pronounced than what was specified in Henry Greenly's original design.

During World War II, Northern Chief performed some work but was in poor condition by 1946. To keep her operational during the first post-war season, she had to be fitted with No. 3 locomotive's boiler. After an accident at Dymchurch, she received her own re-tubed boiler. Subsequently, in 1947-48, Northern Chief underwent a complete overhaul at New Romney.
